Getting around in Hornbæk
Having taken the car to Hornbæk makes for great flexibility getting around the area, but there are loads of alternative ways of getting in and around.
The coastal track and tiny alleys of town calls for the two-wheelers, the water calls for something with paddle in hand and the forests have never been prettier than from the seat of the local train.
Car:
Since Hornbæk is a rather small town, driving your car around the city is in most cases not necessary. If you happen to arrive by car, there’s plenty of free parking down by the beach, west from the harbour. By car, visiting Tegner’s Museum and Sculpture Park is a breeze, since it’s a bit into the country.
Train:
In northern Zealand, taking the small yellow train called “Grisen” (translating to, “The Pig”) is a main stable in getting around these parts. Taking the train from Elsinore towards Gilleleje, it stops right in the middle of Hornbæk town, and feature a splendid trip through the coastal forests. During July, an old vintage steam-train drives the track on Sundays.
Bicycle:
Taking your bike on the train to Elsinore and biking from there to Hornbæk is definitely worth the trip. The cycle-tracks line coast all the way, and it’s as pretty as It gets, with the possibility of a few ice-cream stops along the way. If the 14 km trip is a little much, you can just log your bikes onto the train and use them to circumvent the cute alleyways and treelined backstreets of town. A bike ride into Hornbæk Plantation is a must if you’ve brought the two-wheeler, with all its crooked old trees lining the beach.
On the water
On the calm sunny days, a paddle on a SUP or in a kayak is the best and most fun way to get up and down the beach. You can rent your equipment at Surf Shop Hornbæk.
