Podcast: Insider's Guide to Copenhagen - Drinks and Danish Smørrebrød

photo_by: Mellanie Gandø

Join Italian bartender Harry Bell as he takes radio and television host Esben Bjerre for a stroll through some of his favourite Copenhagen spots and shares what makes Copenhagen special to him.

When Harry Bell wanted to expand his horizons and leave Italy, his friend told him, "Do you want to be in the place where everything already happened or do you want to be in the place where everybody needs to be?" Harry went to Copenhagen because he knew it as a place with a strong food scene. His plan was to stay for a year - and eight years later, he is still here. According to himself, he has lost his heart to Copenhagen.

Join Harry as he shows Esben where he spends his time in Copenhagen and where he brings his international friends. They walk from place to place, because Harry wants people to know how walkable of a city Copenhagen is and how short-distanced things can be.

On Baldersgade in the hip Nørrebro area lies Dzidra (with a silent D!). Dzidra invites you in to a cozy space, where the modern design and calm atmosphere contribute to the delicious food experience. The menu consists of a few selected dishes and an emphasis on cakes. As they put it, the sweet items on the menu will be “whatever cute things we made for the day.”

Assistens Cemetery

Picnic in a graveyard? Sunbathing among tombs? No problem! While it might be a cultural chock that Danes hang out in graveyards, just like it was to Harry, but seeing as it is such a gorgeous space it's hard not to enjoy yourself. The graveyard has some of Denmark's most famous people buried, for example Niels Bohr and Hans Christian Andersen.

Landbohøjskolens Have

The campus and the gardens were established in 1858 and are major attractions for both staff and students, interested neighbours and visitors from other parts of Denmark and abroad. Still, it can be completely free of people. As Harry says, if you come at the right time, you will be alone. He considers it his "head-clearing" spot. The urban garden has over 6000 wild plants and is completely free of charge.

Harry's own bar bird. on Frederiksberg is a great place to start - and end - an evening. The cocktails and mocktails are with the best ingredients available, and the DJ's play quiet jazz from the many vinyls to set the mood.
