Podcast: Insider's Guide to Copenhagen - Art, wellness and a spectacular view

photo_by: Mark Tanggaard

Join Director Mamie Beth Cary as she takes radio and television host Esben Bjerre for a stroll through some of her favourite Copenhagen spots and shares what makes Copenhagen special to her.

According to Mamie Beth Cary, Copenhagen is a "small dog with a big dog mentality." Born in central London, she moved to Copenhagen in 2016 and works as Director of von Bartha. Copenhagen has a great art scene where Mamie quickly discovered a simple life was possible. She says, that there is " this kind of charm in Copenhagen" where life is more simple, there is more quality, the streets are clean, and where water and height combine with the landscape.

Join Mamie as she shows Esben where she spends her time in Copenhagen and where she brings her friends.

Carlsberg City District

The Carlsberg City District combines the new with the old and is a "new part of town" where many places have opened in the past few years - despite having some of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen, notably the Carlsberg Brewery. This brewing era has left behind a distinct fundament and exceptional heritage for the district to be built upon, handing the neighbourhood various presents in the form of historical buildings and industrial and scientific history.

von Bartha

Mamie is the museum Director at von Bartha, the old gatehouse to the Carlsberg Brewery. The 'lighthouse' in the building was actually a guard post and is now part of the gallery. von Bartha is Denmark's first and only international gallery, and it hosts modern and contemporary art. von Bartha is 75 square metres in size and is no stranger to "quirky" spaces - in Basel, they have a petrol station right in front of their museum! Copenhagen also has a courtyard with various sculptures on display that can be enjoyed regardless of the season.

Christianshavns Bådudlejning og Café

On Christianshavns Canal at the very end of Knippelsbro, you can find a small green wooden cabin - this cabin houses "Christianshavns Bådudlejning og Café" which has been operating as a rowing boat hire, café and music venue since 1905. In cosy surroundings with a direct view of the water, you can enjoy both lunch and dinner from a bistro-inspired menu. If you're thirsty rather than hungry, you can also settle for a cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a beer from a local Christianshavn brewery.

Sofiebadet

The concept of 'bathhouses' was foreign to Mamie - as it is with most non-Danes! Sofiebadet dates back to 1909, when it was one of two Copenhagen bathing establishments where the working class, who did not yet have a bath at home, could come and get clean. Today, it is more of a wellness and spa experience, where beautiful rooms are well-preserved, making it both a spa experience and a trip to a museum all in one when you stop by. As Mamie says, it has a "grand feeling."
